In order to eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), we must ensure access and uptake of NTD medicines, especially by those who have often been systematically missed by NTD interventions. To do so, we must first identify the underlying reasons they are not being reached, which are often related to gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, disability, or location. In order to do this, USAID’s Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases | East (Act | East) program conducted a series of gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) assessments in Uganda, Nepal, Haiti, Tanzania and Ethiopia to identify how GESI-related factors impact the ability of different groups to access and use NTD services, and how the findings can inform programmatic strategies to better reach people who have historically missed treatment.
